From the Historical Society
Veteran’s Day, November 11, is a federal holiday honoring and celebrating the bravery and commitment of all Military Veterans. We have posted a concise 2010 article relating the history of Veteran's Day as well as a list of Moreland Hills Veterans on our website: https://mhhsohio.org/thank-you-moreland-hills-veterans/. We thank our neighbors who have served our country.
On November 19, we remember the birth of President James A. Garfield. As you may remember, Garfield was born in 1831 in Orange Township, which was later divided to create Pepper Pike, Woodmere, Orange Village, Hunting Valley, and of course, Moreland Hills.
The Historical Society preserves the history of Moreland Hills and that of the Garfield family. We use the James A. Garfield Birth Site Park and replica cabin to educate our community and share his story. James Garfield worked the farm and played in the woods and fields in Moreland Hills as a young boy in the 1830’s and 1840’s. Some toys he may have been exposed to in the early 19th century were a top, a ball, a kite, a whistle and wooden blocks. If you have any of these vintage toys (or vintage-looking toys) we ask that you consider donating them to help us share this piece of our story. MHHSohio@gmail.com.
